Regional Conference of the Parliamentary Committees on Defence and Security of South-East Europe

 
Organized by the BiH PA Joint Committee on Defence and Security and the Centre for Security Co-operation in South-East Europe (RACVIAC), today and tomorrow, a two-day Regional Conference of the Parliamentary Committees on Defence and Security of South-East Europe will be held in Rakitje, the Republic of Croatia.

Those Committees dealing with democratic oversight of the defence and security sector from Albania, BiH, Montenegro, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Turkey took part in the conference.

The following people participated in the conference on the BiH PA’s behalf: Chairwoman Dušanka Majkić, members of the Joint Committee on Defence and Security, Nermina Zaimović-Uzunović and Krunoslav Vrdoljak, and the Parliamentary Military Commissioner of BiH, Boško Šiljegović.

This conference is the latest in a number of activities that the BiH PA Joint Committee on Defence and Security has organized in co-operation with the RACVIAC, as a forum for Parliamentarians from South-East European States and distinguished experts in the field of defence and security on the topic of Parliamentary oversight of the defence and security sector.

The conference’s aim is to allow the exchange of experiences and best practices in the those Committees dealing with Parliamentary oversight of the defence and security sector in South-East European States, to adopt existing legislation, and to further improve Parliamentary oversight in the region.

During the conference, representatives of the Committees on Defence and Security of South-East European Parliaments will exchange experiences of the challenges facing the democratic oversight of the defence and security sector in the region, Parliamentary oversight mechanisms, the legislative frameworks that allow this oversight, and the implementation of Parliamentary hearings and investigations. Parliamentary representatives will also talk about democratic control of the defence and security sector’s budget, as well as the conditions for efficient democratic control of national security within each State.

The conference is organized with the support of NATO Headquarters in Sarajevo, the OSCE Mission to BiH and the Centre for Democratic Control of the Armed Forces (DCAF) from Geneva.  (end)
